President Thabo Mbeki said in a statement today that the move followed concerns by the national government about the quality of the administration in the province.
"For some time, our national government has been concerned about the quality of the administration in the Eastern Cape province resulting in serious deficiencies in service delivery," he said, adding that government had, over time, made various specific interventions to assist the province.
"The team will work with the provincial government and administration to address such areas as health, education, social development, finance and the eradication of corrupt practices within the public sector," President Mbeki explained.
It was instituted after broad consultations with Premier Makhenkesi Stofile.
President Mbeki’s remarks follow hot on the heels of the recent political turmoil in that province, resulting in the resignation of education MEC Stone Sizani and the subsequent sacking of social development MEC Ncumisa Kondlo and roads and public works MEC Phumulo Masualle.
The trio have since been replaced by Nomsa Jajula (education), Gloria Barry (roads and public works) and Neo Moerane (social development).
The new MECs are expected to assume responsibilities after being sworn in by Chief Justice Cecile Somyalo in Grahamstown, on Monday.
"Both the national and provincial governments are determined to do everything possible to ensure that the people of the Eastern Cape receive the services to which they are entitled," President Mbeki affirmed. -BuaNews
