The Green Scorpions are conducting inspections around the country as part of a national environmental law compliance campaign, they said on Monday.

Officially known as the Environmental Management Inspectorate, they had already paid visits to sites in KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State and were moving to the Eastern Cape, spokesperson Roopa Singh said in a statement.

"Based on the risk prioritisation process, the sites that will be inspected are, Transnet East London Car Terminal, Working for Wetlands and Coega, Transnet in Port Elizabeth."

The inspections would take place from Monday to Friday.

In KwaZulu-Natal the construction projects at Bhanga Neck and Enkovukeni Primary School in Kosi Bay within iSimangaliso Wetland Park, were among the sites visited.

Officials were satisfied with the rehabilitation process of the two completed projects, Singh said.

Construction in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, for the New Public Hide at Mfenzana pan, Eastern Shores of the lake within Great St Lucia and Western Shores road and entrance gate projects had been put on hold.

Construction of Transnet's multi-product pipeline from Jameson Park to Durban was progressing well.

In the Free State construction work for Sanral N8, Bloemfontein Airport Access Road, artificial wetland and Sanyati Warehouse was completed in July, and rehabilitation work was "outstanding".

Following the inspections, the Green Scorpions would consolidate their preliminary findings for the various sites. Decisions would then be made about what to do about cases of non-compliance.

Members of the public could report violations of environmental laws to 0800-205-005
