The
African National Congress in Parliament on Thursday announced a
number of changes to its top appointments in the institution,
including that of chief whip of the majority party.
In a statement handed out at a media briefing after the ANC's
weekly caucus meeting, outgoing chief whip Nathi Nhleko said
Mbulelo Goniwe had been appointed to take over from him.
The new caucus chairwoman would be Vytjie Mentor.
MPs appointed to chair the ANC's study groups included: Finance:
Rob Davies, with Rhoda Joemat as his deputy; International Affairs:
Job Sithole and Fatima Hajaig (co-chairs); Minerals and Energy:
Nathi Mthethwa; Public Enterprises: Yunis Carrim; Sport and
Recreation: Butana Komphela; Trade and Industry: Ben Martins; Water
Affairs: Connie September; and Joint Budget: Nhlanhla Nene.
These MPs are expected to be appointed to also chair the National
Assembly's respective committees.
Nhleko said the decision on the chairs appointed was "reflexive and
informed" by ANC policy positions on gender equality, political
maturity, experience and demographics.
There were now 12 women out of 34 chairs, he said. - Sapa.
