Title: Gelderblom: World Water Day
STATEMENT BY THE WESTERN CAPE MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE, TOURISM AND GAMBLING, JOHAN GELDERBLOM, DURING WORLD WATER DAY, 20 March 2003
Water gives life. To alleviate poverty in South Africa, it is critical to have reliable, safe drinking water, water for sanitation and hygiene and water for growing crops. Water is necessary for rural development and urban renewal.
South Africa is however a water scarce country with an average yearly rainfall of just more than half of the world average of 900 mm per annum. Our rainfall differs greatly from year to year and the country is also prone to droughts.
The competition for water will increase in the future. Water savings can have a huge influence on the building of new water schemes at enormous costs and will have a positive effect on the economy of the Western Cape.
It is for this reason that Western Cape Government is hosting a Provincial Water Summit in May 2003 in Stellenbosch, where decision makers in national, provincial and local government, together with representatives of agriculture and environment will find solutions to implement sustainable water usage.
