Government will embark on the first National Imbizo Focus Week of the new administration from 14 - 20 July 2014. The Izimbizo programme ensures constant engagements between the National Executive and communities and is one of the government communication platforms deepening citizen involvement in all aspects of public life. The programme has since developed into a popular and trusted platform for unmediated communication between government and the public.

“Connecting with our people is going to be crucial in moving South Africa forward. It reinforces a key pillar of a participatory and consultative democracy. The revival of the Imbizo programme is a platform where government listens to the people. Members of the members of National, Provincial and Local Executives will be going to interact with our people across the country during this focus week”, said Minister of Communications, Faith Muthambi.

This year’s Imbizo Focus Week takes place against the background of the country celebrating 20 Years of Freedom. The theme for the Imbizo Focus Week is “Together we move South Africa forward”. The Focus Week falls within Mandela Month and coincides with the first International Mandela Day since the passing of the struggle icon and founding President, Dr Nelson Mandela. It offers South Africans and the world an occasion to honour the ethos of the late former President Mandela.

Minister Muthambi said, “Government is calling on all South Africans to join hands as directed by the theme and build on the foundations of the past 20 years. We all have a role to play in moving South Africa forward. We need all sectors of society - business, labour and civil society - to play their part in advancing the South African economy”.

During the State of the Nation Address, President Zuma encouraged the nation to participate in a clean-up of cities, towns, townships, villages, schools and beautify every part of the country. Government urges all citizens to practice a healthier and cleaner way of living by taking care of the environment and cleaning up the areas where they live.

Imbizo is a basis for sustained dialogue between government and people including civil society organs, it is also a mechanism for fact-finding by government to align services with needs. It is a direct response to community issues and concerns through strengthened partnerships.

The Imbizo Focus Week programme will be available on government website www.gov.za. For daily updates on the Focus week follow @GCIS_Media
