As South Africa commemorates the month of October as Transport Month, government calls on all road-users to exercise caution on the roads and obey traffic rules. Under the theme ‘Together we move South Africa forward’, road safety continues to remain one of the government’s priorities.

Government is aware that road accidents take a massive toll on society and calls on road users including pedestrians to be more vigilant as the festive season approaches.
Acting Cabinet Spokesperson, Phumla Williams said: “Every person is accountable for a responsible behavior on the roads. A death is one too many. We cannot tolerate any more carnage on our roads. Government continues to work with all stakeholders to provide safe, reliable and efficient transport systems. ”

“Road fatalities are a major concern to government, however it takes society as a whole to ensure that they play their part in curbing the high accident rate.  The death toll as a result of road accidents remains at an unacceptable level. Too many lives are lost and families duly affected because of, among others, reckless driving,” added Williams.
Government will also showcase the progress achieved in its transport programmes and projects during October. “As people begin to prepare for long trips over the upcoming festive season, let us be responsible by ensuring that our vehicles are roadworthy and that we abide by the prescribed road rules,” said Williams.

Together we can make our roads safer.
