The Minister of Transport, Ms Dipuo Peters, condemns the illegal blocking of some sections of the R24 by the Metered taxi drivers, today, 10th March 2017.

The protest has affected the R21, R24 and the N12 highways and inconvenienced motorists who were travelling in these routes.

It is unfortunate that some meter taxi operators will resort to anarchy, whilst the Department of Transport is in the process of responding to their memorandum in consultation with the leadership of the meter taxi associations and the relevant provincial authorities.

The Department is committed to a peace and speedy resolution of the matter as contained in the memorandum, however the Department will not tolerate acts of lawlessness demonstrated by some meter taxi operators.

Minister Peters applauds the swift response by the Gauteng Traffic Police supported by other law enforcement agencies who cleared the affected roads and ensure that motorist travelling in these roads are safe.

Minister Peters would like to apologise for the inconveniences that might has been caused to motorists as a result of this protest and thank all motorist for their patience, understanding and cooperation.
