The Gauteng Department of Community Safety will host the second installment of the annual Gauteng Community Safety Awards at the Johannesburg City Hall on Thursday, 21 February 2019, in the evening. The awards ceremony, which is part of the Provincial Safety Month programme, seek to recognize and acknowledge the outstanding contribution made by members of Gauteng Law Enforcement Agencies (LEA) and social partners in improving the safety and security of Gauteng citizens.
 
The ceremony, to be addressed by MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane, is expected to be attended by about 500 delegates including representatives of various Law Enforcement Agencies, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Community Policing Forum (CPF) amongst others.
 
“This year’s Community Safety Awards promise to be an eventful and memorable occasion for law enforcement officers as they line up to be awarded for their excellent service and dedicating their lives by going beyond the call of duty to ensure the safety and security of our people in Gauteng.” said MEC Nkosi-Malobane.
 
The MEC further emphasized the importance of having leadership within the law enforcement agencies recognizing the work done by their officers as part of motivating them.
“Our law enforcement officers work under the most difficult and dangerous conditions. Their daily duties include things that most of us would avoid doing in our lifetime. Their work is indeed a calling and requires passion.”
 
The awards ceremony is a culmination of an intense adjudication process in five categories by senior members of the department and the South African Police Service.

The awards categories are as follows -   Gauteng Police Station of the Year, which will be awarded to a police station which met criteria such as improved police visibility, investigation of crime, improved crime statistics, leadership, Most Improved Priority Police Station (from the 40 Priority Stations) is based on the reduction of crime, frontline service delivery and improved police visibility,  Best Collaborative Gauteng Information on Police Performance System (GIPPS) Station, forging of partnerships with stakeholders, attending GIPPS sessions, Metro Police Departments Awards (based on triple mandate) such as Traffic Law Enforcement, By-law Enforcement and crime prevention.
 
The Community Awards, which includes the Most Effective Community Policing Forum (CPF), Most Effective Victim Empowerment Centre(VEC), Most Effective Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS), Effective Community Safety Forum (CSF) and Best Patroller Group, Gauteng Traffic Police, which includes Most effective specialised unit (based on crime prevention), Most Improved Regional Office, HOD’s Award which includes Most Dedicated Unit, Dedicated Employee and Innovative Employee and lastly The MEC Award.
 
The awards ceremony is expected to be attended by the Members of Mayoral Committee on Safety, the newly appointed Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, Chiefs of various Metropolitan and Local Police Departments, Gauteng Provincial Community Policing Forum Board and other social partners with an interest on safety.
