The Gauteng Provincial Government will host a two-day ICT Summit on Monday, 02 November 2015 and Tuesday, 03 November 2015 at Gallagher Convention Centre, Midrand. This inaugural summit takes place under the theme “Connecting the Gauteng City Region for Modern and Faster Public Services”.

The summit is spearheaded by the newly created e-Government Department which is headed by the MEC for Finance, Ms Barbara Creecy. The department’s mandate is to transform how the Gauteng City Region manages its ICT investments, in order to better support service delivery.

The e-Government Department is tasked to maintain and improve IT service delivery, generate savings and implement government wide IT solutions that are modern, reliable and secure. The Department of e-Government will assist, among other things, in the e-invoicing system that has ensured payment of suppliers within 30 days.

The e-Government Department will make service delivery quicker and faster, modernise our systems and also create a province that is innovative and responsive and a place of ideas and creativity to young entrepreneurs. 

“The Gauteng Government has recognized the immense benefits of implementing an e-government strategy as it has been proven to be a catalyst in reducing costs, promoting transparency and accountability, improving public administration and promoting economic development”, said MEC Creecy.

Republic of Korea, Australia, and Singapore are the leading countries in the world respectively and that is why the Gauteng Government saw it fit to invite guests like Mr. Mr. Sian Lip Tan, one of the prominent Chief Technology Officers from Singapore to share his knowledge and expertise. Other guests include top ICT experts from Kenya and Rwanda and top experts from South African companies like Deloitte, Gautrain, Google, Telkom, Microsoft etc. Mayors will also share with the  summit on how they plan to make cities smarter, more efficient and innovative.

“The summit will share the vision of the Gauteng City Region in terms of e-government strategy as well as look at progress made in implementing the strategy in Gauteng”, said MEC Creecy.

Some of the discussions at the summit will include e-Learning, e-Health, e-Transport, ICT Industry stimulation among other. The summit will also look at the global trends in e-governance, the progress made in Africa in implementing e-governance strategy’s and progress made thus far by South Africa and Gauteng in this regard.
