The FF Plus will be asking the Public Protector to investigate alleged political interference at Cricket South Africa (CSA) after Mike Horn, the team’s official motivator, confirmed that interference did influence the team choice, Adv. Anton Alberts, the FF Plus’ parliamentary spokesperson on Sport said.
Adv. Alberts said that the allegations against Haroon Lorgat, chief executive of CSA are loaded so strongly that it is impossible to deny the allegations as mere lies any longer.
He said it is possible that Lorgat and Russel Domingo, the Protea coach, as well as the players are not prepared to play open cards about the issue as they may fear for their careers.
“It is however in the interest of sport as a whole in South Africa that the truth about the matter must be revealed. CSA is a member of the SA Sport Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) which receives funds from the state to ensure optimal sport participation.
“South Africa’s sport minister said today according to media reports that the choice of teams is in the hands of the coach and his management team. This is how it should be as only merit should be the determining factor when teams are chosen to participate internationally.
“As the relevant parties are now keeping quiet about the issue, the PP has to intervene to obtain the truth. If someone had lied about the issue, strict action against the person or persons should be taken,” Adv. Alberts said.
