Despite an increasingly positive outlook substantially faster growth will be needed to reduce poverty in Africa, Finance Minister Trevor Manuel said on Wednesday.

Finance Minister Trevor Manuel, attending the annual African Development Bank meeting in Kampala, Uganda, said the Millenium Development Goals would not be met without faster growth.

Over the past 25 years, the continent had grown poorer, he said.

Africa as a whole would only achieve the universal education targets in 2029, while halving poverty would take another 100 years. Meeting the desired child mortality rates would only happen in 2169.

The lack of progress on issues of participation and voting power of developing countries in the IMF and World Bank was holding back the creation of productive global partnerships, Manuel said. - Sapa
