The Eskom Development Foundation officially opened entries for the annual Business Investment Competition (BIC) on 14 June 2016. Time is fast running out as entries will close this coming Friday, 29 July 2016.  With R1.3 million up for grabs across all its sectors, small or medium enterprises can ill afford to miss out on this golden opportunity to win their share of the prize money to inject into their businesses.

The BIC is aimed at recognising, rewarding and inspiring small businesses that are significantly contributing to local economic growth, sustainability and the transfer of skills and job creation. The competition is open to local, black-owned and registered enterprises that have been operating for more than 24 months in any province in the manufacturing, engineering/construction, trade/services, agricultural and agri-processing sectors.

Since its inception in 2008, the competition has been helping enterprises move to the next level with not only the financial rewards, but business skills and training provided as part of their prizes. The overall winner (judged the best business across all sectors) receives R150 000 while the sector winners each take home R100 000. There are also prizes for first and second runners-up as well as the other finalists in all sectors.

As part of the competition, all finalists are also given an opportunity to exhibit at the annual 3-day Small Business Expo (SBE), held alongside the #BuyaBusiness Expo at the TicketPro Dome from 8 to 10 September in Johannesburg. The Small Business Expo is devoted to the development and growth of small and medium sized enterprises by giving them an opportunity to market themselves and interact with corporates and investors.

Amongst the benefits of participating at the expo are that entrepreneurs can meet face to face with a qualified target audience, get access to pre-arranged meetings, which pro-actively connect participants to help them achieve their business goals. The expo will also launch and host an Investors Club, which will include investors, procurement managers and business owners who are looking to acquire business services.

Over the years, the Eskom Development Foundation has been committed to making a positive impact on the lives of the people in the communities where they operate and programmes such as the BIC do just that. The overall winner for 2015, Ezekiel Madigoe, owner of Mamapo Chemicals from Lebowakgomo (Limpopo), says they had never imagined or expected to win the competition and were merely trying out. “It was totally unexpected and the prize money assisted us a lot as we were able to buy more machinery to increase our production capacity and meet the increasing demand. We were also able to bring in four new employees and look forward to contributing further to our local economy. For any small business out there that qualifies for the competition, I say go for it. You will not regret your decision to enter and will learn a lot. After all, you’ve got nothing to lose,” says Madigoe.

With the closing date fast approaching, Acting CEO of the Eskom Development Foundation, Cecil Ramonotsi, says small business owners should seize this chance. “Existing business owners should take advantage of this opportunity to put a spring in the step of their businesses and take them to the next level. In fact, with just under six weeks for entries, I would also urge them to enter as soon as possible to avoid last minute disappointments. This could be their lucky break,” says Ramonotsi.
