"I hereby declare the fourteenth day of April 2004 as a public holiday in all provinces of the republic," states a Government Gazette proclamation signed by President Thabo Mbeki on Thursday.
The document was made available by the Government Printers yesterday.
Last week, presidential spokesperson Bheki Khumalo said Mbeki intended declaring election day a public holiday so that South Africans across the board would be able to cast their votes.
The move was approved by Cabinet on Wednesday. – Sapa.
