Eastern Cape Premier Makhenkesi Stofile has announced the reshuffle of his executive council, appointing three MECs to fill the recently vacated education, roads and public works as well as social development posts.

Filling up the social development portfolio is Neo Moerane, who chaired the RDP and corporate services standing committee in the province.

Ms Moerane takes over from Ms Ncumisa Kondlo who ‘vacated’ her post this morning along with Roads and Public Works MEC Phumulo Masualle.

Ms Gloria Barry, Housing and Local Government standing committee chair, takes over from MEC Masualle, while the Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Education Nomsa Jajula will fill the education MEC post vacated by Mr Stone Sizane last week.

Mr Sizane resigned last Wednesday, citing personal reasons for leaving the department but speculation had been rife that the most senior authorities in government had ordered the Premier to axe the three.

The new MECs are expected to assume responsibilities after being sworn in by Chief Justice Cecile Somyalo in Grahamstown, on Monday.

Briefing media about the move today, Premier Stofile outlined that the actions taken were not about non-delivery, but a commitment to continuously strive for excellence in service delivery.

He thus highlighted a number of major achievements in the province, including the construction of 700 clinics, 850 classrooms on average per annum, as well as the maintenance of hundreds of kilometres of gravel roads.

Premier Stofile also noted that the province had the fastest growing economy in the country, which from 1998 to 2001, registered a real growth of 14 percent, way above the national average.

An ‘amazing’ 62 percent growth in agricultural output, including forestry and fishing, had also been realised. – BuaNews
