The
African National Congress had received more than two-thirds of
the votes counted by 12.40pm on Thursday.
According to updated preliminary election results, the party had
received 4,99-million or 68,07% of the votes. Just over 35% of
ballots had been counted.
The Democratic Alliance was second in line with 1,1-million or
15,15% of the vote, followed by the Inkatha Freedom Party with 374
517 or 5,11%.
The Independent Democrats came in at 152 009 or 2,07% -- just ahead
of the New National Party with 149 552 or 2,04% of the vote.
The African Christian Democratic Party stood at 1,83%, the United
Democratic Movement at 1,83%, the Freedom Front Plus at 1,32%, and
the Pan Africanist Congress at 0,72%.
The Keep It Straight and Simple party was lagging the furthest
behind with 0,04% of the vote.
The Independent Electoral Commission could not yet give any
indication of voter turn-out.
In the hotly contested province of KwaZulu-Natal, the ANC was
leading with 42,32% of the votes counted, followed by the IFP with
38,04% and the DA with 11,38%. The IFP's other alliance partner,
the Freedom Front Plus, had 0,39%.
In the Western Cape, the ANC had 40,25% of the vote, the DA 31,46%,
the NNP 10,11% and the ID 8,72%.
The ANC had 60,99% of the votes counted in Gauteng, followed by the
DA with 27,35%, and the ACDP with 2,14. The ID had with 1,91
percent in Gauteng.
In the Eastern Cape, the ANC had 78,95% of the votes counted, in
the Free State 77,01%, in Mpumalanga 85,30%, in the Northern Cape
68,03%, in Limpopo 89,08% and in the North West 81,66% -
Sapa.
