dti: Copyright issues under the spotlight at the dti Copyrights Amendment Bill conference

Prominent speakers will share ideas, give inputs and comments on the Copyrights Amendment Bill at a consultative conference which will be hosted by the Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) at the Birchwood Hotel, Boksburg tomorrow, starting from 09H00.

Delegates will comprise of various stakeholders including academics, artists, authors, publishers, photographers, government officials and people with disabilities, amongst others.

The chairman of the Standing Advisory Committee on Intellectual Property and retired Judge Ian Farlam, who was appointed by the Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies in 2010 to chair the Copyright Review Commission, will set the scene with opening remarks on issues pertaining to copyright.

Discussions on trends and developments on the state of copyright industry in South Africa will be led by the Chief Director of Policy and Legislation at the dti, Mr MacDonald Netshitenzhe.

The President of the South African Music Industry Council, Mr Eugene Mthethwa, the President of the Creative Industry Federation of South Africa, Mr Tony Kgoroge, and the board chairman of the South African Music Performance Rights Association, Mr Keith Lister will lead a panel of discussions on the pertinent industry issues on royalty management and piracy.

Professor Tana Pistorius from the University of South Africa and the Public Policy Manager at Google South Africa, Mr Fortune Mgwili-Sibanda will lead the discussions on the Information and Communication Technologies with regards to the copyright.

The conference will also focus the discussions on the education, research and access to knowledge, the contribution of the copyright industry and coordination in the copyright industry and interventions.

The Copyright Amendment Bill was published for broader public comment by the Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies. Interested persons have until 16 September 2015 to submit their comments.
