As South Africa’s 20 Years of Freedom celebrations draw to a close, the Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation is excited to announce that the 21 thematic background papers that informed the Twenty Year Review are now available online at www.thepresidency-dpme.gov.za.

As part of the country’s 20 years of Freedom celebrations, President Jacob Zuma released the Twenty Year Review on 11 March 2014. This synopsis report was informed by 21 thematic areas which assess progress made by the country over the past two decades.
The thematic background papers were written by officials in the Presidency and other government departments using research and other evidence to assess progress, sector developments and challenges still facing the country. Each of the thematic papers underwent intensive peer-reviewing and editing guided by a common conceptual framework.
The thematic background documents reflected on the significant advances the country has made in transforming the apartheid state into a democratic one founded on the values of human dignity, non-discrimination, non-racialism and non-sexism, the rule of law, and universal adult suffrage as enshrined in the Constitution. Furthermore, they found unequivocally that millions of our people have been lifted out of poverty and now have access to water, healthcare, education, housing and many other basic services which they did not have before 1994.

We encourage South Africans to use the Twenty Year Review and its background documents to bring about a positive change in our society in line with the National Development Plan.
