Title: Didiza: Inauguration of Agricultural Research Council board members

INAUGURATION SPEECH OF THE NEW BOARD MEMBERS OF THE ARC, BY THE MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE AND LAND AFFAIRS, MS THOKO DIDIZA, 30 June 2003

I would like to start by thanking the chairperson, Mr T Setiloane, together with the deputy chairperson - both of the previous Agricultural Research Council board - for the wonderful work done for the past three years. In difficult limited times which they have, they managed to transform the ARC to where it is today. Although transformation is an on going process, the previous board managed to put the divisional structure in place, and as I speak now the process of appointing the executive management has been completed.

It is also my humble pleasure to welcome those who have been appointed to the ARC board to the total governance of this organisation. In terms of the provisions of the act, you were considered for appointment by virtue of your knowledge and experience of agriculture, marketing, the training of agriculturists and veterinarians, business and financial management, the law, the environment and rural development.

The objectives of the ARC are to promote agriculture and industry through research, development and technology transfer, and thereby to contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of the people of the Republic, and having regard to the protection of the environment to perform such other functions as may be assigned to the ARC by or under the Act. The board has therefore been appointed to promote the ARC vision and mission statement.

I am happy to introduce the following appointees to the ARC board: i.e.

1. Mr Thero Micarios Lesego Setiloane, general manager Anglo Gold, and chairperson of the previous board. Mr Setiloane was also the former executive director of the Real Africa Group.

2. Prof Frans J.C. Swanepoel, Executive Head: Directorate of Research Development, University of the Free State, and vice chairperson of the previous board. Prof. Swanepoel has been a member of various professional organisations in the field of animal production genetics and served on boards and committees. He has acted as advisor /consultant /co-ordinator and has received several awards.

3. Ms Jean Davidson, managing director of Caroza Farms that grows roses for local and export markets. Ms Davidson received the National Female Farmer of the Year Award in 1999.

4. Prof Jan Gabriel Raats, executive dean, Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, University of Fort Hare. Held various positions on several specialist bodies and receiver of various awards; also involved in community service.

5. Mr Andile Maxwell Hawes, business development manager for Mpumalanga Agricultural Development Corporation. Member of various boards, and undertook several study tours.

6. Ms Ansoria Geldenhuys, farming entrepreneur and stud breeder of Ansoria Gelbvieh Stud. In 2000, she was chosen as Female Farmer of the Year in the North West Province.

7. Mr Avhatuwi Richard Tshivhase, full-time farmer and president of Northern Region Farmers Union of Limpopo Province. Connected to several government institutions and involved in community service.

8. Dr Moses Mbewe, senior lecturer at the Faculty of Science, Health and Agriculture at the University of the North. He is chairperson of the executive committee of the Concerned Lecturers and Academic Support Services Group. The organisation is concerned with advancing quality education by encouraging excellence.

9. Mr Moses Singo, managing director of Singoflora, a company specialising in cut foliage, flower production and trading. He has extensive knowledge of agricultural issues.

I finally wish you a pleasant stay with the ARC more courage for new and upcoming agricultural research challenges.
