Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development MEC Jacob Mamabolo has assured the Gauteng Provincial Legislature of an unwavering commitment to act promptly and swiftly to ensure that underutilised or neglected government properties are managed efficiently and effectively.

Responding to parliamentary question by Honourable Member Pinky Mncube of the ANC Mamabolo conceded that this has been an area of weakness and poor performance. He further clarified that the efficient and effective management of government properties would not have been possible without the completion of the Immovable Asset Register. The Gauteng Provincial Government’s Immovable Asset Register, which is a data base of its property portfolio, is worth R30 Billion valued at municipal property rates. The Immovable Asset Register was only completed mid-last year.

Mamabolo announced the establishment of a Departmental Task Team chaired by the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to ensure that underutilised and neglected properties are disposed of, in full compliance with the provisions of the Government Immovable Asset Management Act (GIAMA). He further reaffirmed the need to ensure that this process is managed in the most transparent and ethical manner, consistent with the values of a clean administration.

“The partnership on I Care We Care Campaign that GDID entered into with the Movement Regeneration Movement (MRM), led by Father Smangaliso Mkhatswa will also add new impetus to this important task. MRM will work closely with communities to manage these properties in a manner that meet their needs and expectations,” Mamabolo told the house.

He also acknowledged that many of these properties are a sore point in communities, and some are hijacked by criminals and used for criminal activities, which made necessary for the matter to be addressed promptly and swiftly.
