The Deputy Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Ms. Rejoice Mabudafhasi, will join the community of Newcastle in KwaZulu-Natal on 29 August 2013, to celebrate the town’s receipt of the Greenest Municipality Awards (GMC) for three consecutive years from 2011 to 2013.

2013 is the third year that the Newcastle Local Municipality (NLM) in the Amajuba District has won the award.
The Amajuba District won the sought after award due to the socio-economic differences it is making as a result of its greening initiatives among the local municipalities within the district. Because of the municipality’s success its policies are being utilised as best practice benchmark for other municipalities to follow suit. The programmes which won the NLM the coveted awards include the Municipality’s Integrated Waste Management Plan, Composting Plant as well as water and energy saving schemes.

The Deputy Minister will host the community of Newcastle to celebrate their achievements over the past three years and the example the Municipality’s management has set for the rest of the country. It is envisaged that the Deputy Minister will be accompanied by KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Agriculture and Environmental Affairs Dr. Meshack Radebe and the Mayor of Newcastle Cllr Afzul Rehman.
