On Friday 14 September 2018, the Democratic Municipal and Allied Workers Union of South Africa (DEMAWUSA), together with members from Waste Group and other private employers who are contracted to Pikitup will be marching to deliver a Memorandum to Executive Mayor Mashaba. Many of these workers have been on endlessly renewable short term contracts, and are paid literally starvation wages, with no job or income security whatsoever. These are working conditions that belong in a pre 1994 South Africa!
Contract workers will take to the streets of Johannesburg to alert the public, and to draw attention to the precariousness of their livihoods at the hands of unscrupulous employers. Schemes like the EPWP were not intended as a substitute for permanent employment, but all of these workers are undertaking essential work to keep our City clean, safe and healthy. They must be fully integrated into the City’s establishment.
In addition, DEMAWUSA has compiled a report on corruption in Pikitup which is frankly explosive, and this too will be made available to the Mayor in the hope that the City will clean up Pikitup once and for all. . The details of the march are as follows:
Date: 14 September 2018
Route: Assembling point at Beyers Naude Square. Marching to Mayor’s Office, Department of Environmental Affairs and Pikitup Head Offices.
