South Africa to relax visa rules to boost investment and tourism

South Africa will ease some immigration rules, including visa waiver agreements with more countries, in an effort to boost investment and tourism, Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba said today.

The changes are part of a broader economic turnaround programme announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa last week as his team seeks to drag Africa's most developed economy out of recession.

Visitors from India and China, highlighted by Ramaphosa as important investment growth areas, will have travel regulations relaxed from next month, including allowing applications for 5-year multiple entry visas.

Chaos erupts at Nelson Mandela Bay council sitting over new DA councillor

Chaos erupted at a Nelson Mandela Bay council meeting on Tuesday after Democratic Alliance councillors refused for their new recruit to be ejected from council.

The drama unfolded shortly after City Manager Johan Mettler cited the recent Port Elizabeth High Court judgment on Victor Manyati’s DA membership.

Mettler said the judgment was clear in that it stated that Manyati would remain on as a councillor until the DA’s disciplinary processes against him were finalised.

Ramaphosa unveils Nelson Mandela statue at UN headquarters

President Cyril Ramaphosa has unveiled a life-sized statue of late president Nelson Mandela at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

Ramaphosa said Nelson Mandela will forever hold a special place in people’s hearts because of his dedication to the service of humanity and the promotion of peace throughout the world ahead of the Nelson Mandela Peace Summit.

He said the enthusiasm with which the international community has embraced the celebration of the centenary of the birth of Mandela was truly humbling for government and South Africans.
