Ministry denies receiving Hlaudi request letter

Winnie Madikizela-Mandela says free education is not possible

The communications ministry has not received any request from the SABC's board for Hlaudi Motsoeneng to be appointed the broadcaster’s acting COO, it said yesterday.

The ministry however said it was aware of a letter, purporting to be from the SABC’s group secretary and addressed to its board, asking it to recommend to Communications Minister Faith Muthambi that she appoint Motsoeneng to the post.

It is impossible for the state to provide free education, struggle veteran Winnie Madikizela-Mandela said yesterday.

She was speaking from her former home on Vilakazi Street in Orlando, Soweto, where she was giving former Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand a tour.

Madikizela-Mandela cited the structure of South African society as being problematic, referring to it as a strangely defined society.

She also said it was impossible to deliver on some of the promises made in the Freedom Charter.

Eleven University of Stellenbosch students have been suspended pending the outcome of disciplinary processes, the institution said yesterday.

Rector and Vice-Chancellor Wim de Villiers said students and staff had a right to protest peacefully.

He said the occupation of buildings, interruption of classes, tests and study sessions, threats, verbal abuse and physical assaults, were unacceptable.

De Villiers said it was vital for academic work to continue unhindered.
