The gloves are off for the 2014 election campaign with the African National Congress in KwaZulu-Natal declaring its intent to obtain a minimum of 70% of the vote and eliminate the opposition.

In the opening salvo of the party's election campaign, ANC provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala said in Durban on Wednesday that the ruling was hoping to "wash out" all opposition parties who he claimed had added no value to the province.

ANC deputy provincial secretary Nomusa Dube said who is also the province's cooperative governance and traditional affairs MEC, said the ANC's delivery record was evident and opposition parties were taking "opportunistic stances".

In 2009 the party garnered almost 63% of the votes in KwaZulu-Natal. The press conferencewas held to announce the party's first election rally, to be held on Sunday in KwaMashu.

Zimbabwe's government said on Wednesday it would supply poor rural farmers with $161-million of free seed and fertilizer to improve food security. However, the grants may be too late for farmers due to start planting this month.

Once a net food exporter, the southern African country is facing its worst food shortage in four years after a drought and poor harvest, the UN World Food Programme said last month.

The government expects to pay $21-million this week to clear arrears to fertiliser and seed firms, as well as farmers who supplied maize to the state-owned Grain Marketing Board.

Finance Minister Patrick Chinamasa and Agriculture Minister Joseph Made said the government wanted to help 1.6-million farmers who are unable to buy the inputs.

Business Unity South Africa has said boosting productivity is increasingly becoming critical as South Africa continues to show a negative trade balance and an ever-widening gap between wages and productivity.

The organisation pointed out that economic growth and competitiveness were directly linked to productivity, and labour-related challenges, including education, labour relations and the general employment environment, had dipped into negative territory.

Busa CEO Nomaxabiso Majokweni said increases in productivity translated into competitive companies and raised real incomes.  She said there was a need to strike a balance between wage growth and productive output, while addressing wage inequalities and transformation in general.”
