President Jacob Zuma threw his weight behind Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan yesterday and asked that the matter be handled with dignity and respect.

Zuma said society was anchored on the rule of law as well as fair and just judicial processes.

His office said Zuma reaffirmed his support for Gordhan and felt the charges came at a "sensitive" time.

Gordhan and former colleagues deputy Sars commissioner Ivan Pillay and former commissioner Oupa Magashula must appear in court on November 2 to face fraud charges relating to Pillay's early retirement and pension benefits he was allegedly not entitled to.

Public Protector Thuli Madonsela has managed to raise R660 000 from cash donations for a fund she established for members of the #FeesMustFall movement, her office said yesterday.

AngloGold Ashanti chairperson Sipho Pityana and corporate Liberty had each pledged R300 000, and former Black Management Forum president Nolitha Fakude pledged R40 000.

The pledges were made at the BMF's 40-year anniversary dinner in Midrand on Friday night.

Students had been protesting for free higher education since September 19.

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan will not resign and will continue serving the country after receiving a ''contaminated'' summons for alleged fraud yesterday, the ministry said.

A statement from his office said the Minister wished to assure the South African citizens that he will continue to serve the country and advance these objectives as long as he was called to do so by the President.

Also making headlines:

Eskom confident it would raise funds for nuclear build programme.

And, Gordhan said the public should hold officials to account.
