President Jacob Zuma said the National General Council (or NGC) was taking place amid a tumultuous economic climate, however, South Africans had something to smile about.

Addressing guests on the eve of the NGC at the Gallagher Convention Centre yesterday, Zuma admitted that while government had failed to meet some of its goals, it had made significant strides in taking the country forward.

He said the target to grow South Africa’s economy by 5% by 2019 seemed difficult to achieve under current conditions. However, he added that countries like the US were still struggling to recover from the 2008 recession.

Rwanda's Supreme Court ruled that President Paul Kagame could run for a third seven-year term, rejecting an attempt by the main opposition party to block changes to the country's constitution.

In the latest instance of an African leader seeking to extend his days in power, the Kagame-controlled parliament backed a motion in July to let him run again as leader of the east African state.

The Supreme Court said it all depended on the opinions of the people.

Meanwhile, the opposition Democratic Green Party, which brought the case before the Supreme Court said it would continue to push for protection of the existing constitutional term limits.

Former Democratic Alliance (or DA) shadow minister for police Dianne Kohler Barnard is expected to appear at a DA disciplinary hearing today after being charged with sharing a controversial social media post.

Kohler Barnard courted controversy last week when she shared a Facebook post from journalist Paul Kirk praising former apartheid president PW Botha.

Barnard, who was recently appointed as deputy shadow minister of public works during a recent DA reshuffle, had since apologised for sharing the post.

DA leader Mmusi Maimane said Barnard would be given the chance at the disciplinary hearing to plead her case to the party's top brass.
