Gordhan says State capture was evident as early as 2014
The State capture phenomenon had been around as early as 2014 in South Africa during former President Jacob Zuma's administration, Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan told the State capture commission of inquiry yesterday.
He said individual corrupt activities, through procuring goods and services from third parties at inflated prices, had been around since 2009.
He said the "final penny dropped" when the Gupta emails leaked to the media emerged publicly. The Minister said people began seeing the evidence and started "connecting the dots" about the impact of State capture.
Zuma says 2019 elections more significant to ANC than 1994 elections
The 2019 general elections are more significant to the ANC than the first democratic elections in 1994, former President Jacob Zuma said yesterday.
Zuma said when we voted for the first time, we were excited and happy that [former president Nelson] Mandela was released from prison.
He said the ruling party has serious challenges it needed to tackle.
Zuma was speaking to scores of people during an ANC KwaZulu-Natal campaign trail in Clermont, west of Durban.
German President in Cape Town to meet Ramaphosa
President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, today received a guard of honour upon his arrival at Tuynhuys in Cape Town where he was welcomed by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The State visit follows a bilateral meeting between Ramaphosa and German Chancellor Dr Angela Merkel on the margins of the G20 Africa Summit in Berlin last month.
The State visit will afford both leaders an opportunity to discuss multilateral issues and to cooperate closely as non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council.
