The KwaZulu-Natal farming community has been the hardest hit during the national drought crisis, the provincial cabinet said.

The cabinet announced that the preliminary assessment of the extent of damage to the province, especially to livestock and crops, stood at above R400-million when the crisis initially hit last year.

The statement came after Umgeni Water said it would restrict water to the iLembe District, Semcorp and parts of eThekwini Metro to 50% bulk water supply as Hazelmere Dam levels dropped to a dangerously low 25.8%.

The province’s total drought relief allocation from national government to date is R443.7-million.

Cabinet further said that about 40 000 cattle had been lost thus far.

iLembe District Mayor Welcome Mdabe confirmed to a news agency that it was likely that people would have to endure water shedding of up to eight hours a day.

Chad's national assembly extended a state of emergency in the western Lake Chad region by four months yesterday following a double attack by Boko Haram militants that killed about 12 people.

A ruling party deputy said the state of emergency was prolonged by 147 unanimous votes by the parliament and would end on March 22.

Chad had helped force Boko Haram to cede territory earlier this year, undermining the Islamist group's six-year campaign to carve out a Nigerian caliphate.

Oil-producing Chad was a key ally in the fight against the Islamist threat across West Africa, playing a central role in offensives on al Qaeda-linked groups in Mali and Boko Haram militants in neighbouring Nigeria.

South African Airways board chairperson Dudu Miyeni asked for seven days within which to tell MPs whether she would resign from her position or not.

Briefing Parliament’s standing committee on finance and its portfolio committee on public enterprises yesterday, Miyeni came under fire from opposition parties.

She didn’t  elaborate on the significance of her requested seven day reprieve.

Chairperson of the standing committee on finance Yunus Carrim gave SAA until January 15 to submit its annual report to Parliament, and submit to scrutiny by MPs.

The airline was budgeting for a R652-million loss.

Also making headlines:

The National Assembly approved the nomination of Lumko Mtimde, the former head of the Media Development and Diversity Agency, and six others as councillors for the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa.

South Africa is the second most preferred investment destination by Gulf companies.

And, the European Union and US officials in Zimbabwe said they were "concerned" about a spike in political violence that had seen clashes between youths from the main ruling Zanu-PF and opposition Movement for Democratic Change parties.
