The Democratic Alliance (or DA) will file an application in terms of the Promotion of Access to Information Act today to access the blue to find out the full extent of the country’s water infrastructure, DA Member of Parliament Leon Basson said.

Basson said  his party suspected that the reports would reveal that African National Congress governments across the country had failed to maintain and upgrade the country’s water infrastructure that had contributed in large part to the current water shortages.

The DA had given Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane a seven-day deadline to release the 2014 blue and green drop reports.

She had announced that she would release the reports by September 30, but, according to the DA, the minister had missed that deadline without an explanation or an alternative date.

The final 68 people who had been in contact with an Ebola patient were released from quarantine on Saturday, said a senior health official, raising hopes of an end to the disease in the last West African country with confirmed cases.

The world's worst Ebola epidemic had already been declared over in Liberia and Sierra Leone. But Guinea, where the outbreak began, has had a more difficult time eradicating the disease.

Dr. Abdourahmane Bathily, head of the Ebola centre in Forecariah in western Guinea, said the 68 contacts had emerged from quarantine at midnight on Saturday morning.

He said there were no longer any people who had contact with a person infected by the Ebola virus.

More than 3 500 people fell ill and 2 000 people died in Guinea during the outbreak.

President Jacob Zuma said collective global action against all forms of terrorism under the auspices of the United Nations was imperative, but addressing the root causes of terrorism was also critical.

The painful human tragedy of the current refugee crisis into Europe had highlighted the need to find lasting solutions, and it should be recognised that as long as there was conflict in the world, refugees would be a reality to contend with, he said.

South Africa remained firm in its condemnation of terrorism and had pledged its support for countering this threat within the framework of the UN.

Zuma echoed sentiments expressed by others, saying the discussion on terrorism should not be conflated with the refugee crisis, especially given the very real complexities underlying their respective root causes.

Also making headlines:

The Presidency said South Africa and Turkey would elevate relations to the level of a binational commission.

The City of Ekurhuleni had imposed water restrictions on residents with considerable fines for non-compliance.

And, African National Congress chief whip Stone Sizani strongly criticised the Democratic Alliance for its stance on Stellenbosch University’s proposed new language policy.
