Parliament yesterday obtained a new labour court interdict against striking staff, prohibiting them from continuing work stoppage and disrupting the business of the legislature.

The Secretary of Parliament, Gengezi Mgidlana said they had been forced to go to court to obtain an interdict, after police clashed with protesters on the steps of the Old Assembly wing.

The interim interdict gave a return date of November 27 for when Nehawu should show cause as to why the court shouldn’t issue a permanent order declaring the strike illegal.

This would prohibit its members from occupying any parliamentary chambers and disrupting the work of the legislature.

Police in riot gear yesterday fired stun grenades at hundreds of staff protesting in the precinct for better employment conditions.

Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari swore in his 36-member cabinet and appointed himself as the head of powerful Petroleum Ministry yesterday, after running the government for more than five months without any ministers.

Buhari, who took charge at the end of May after pledging to end corruption in the west African nation, said his government would try to maximize revenue from the oil industry, which had been hit by theft, fraud and a falling crude oil price.

Buhari said he waited for five months to name his cabinet because he was "mindful of the need to constitute a cabinet that will best deliver the expectations of a better country than he had inherited.

He also appointed former investment banker Kemi Adeosun as finance minister.

South Africans have a tendency of sensationalising issues, President Jacob Zuma said in response to reports about the procurement of a new VIP jet for him.

Zuma said he knew nothing about the so-called plan to buy the jet but he was happy that the military had clarified the issue.

Earlier this week, the South African Air Force held a briefing to clarify the issue regarding the procurement of a new jet, which was speculated to cost more than R4-billion.

SAAF Chief Fabian Msimang told reporters that the air force was not able to cope with the demand for intercontinental travel by government officials and that was why it needed to buy a new jet.

Also making headlines:

The Department of Water and Sanitation said that it had deployed water tankers to provide water to areas that had been hardest hit by the drought.

The Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane had vowed to tackle President Jacob Zuma on the potential acquisition of a R4-billion presidential jet.

And, Grain SA CEO Jannie de Villiers said South African consumers should brace themselves for a double blow on food prices from the countrywide drought and continued rand weakness.
