SABC bans broadcast of protests and destruction of property

In the wave of protests that have engulfed South Africa, state broadcaster SABC today announced it would stop broadcasting protests and footage showing destruction of property, and urged other broadcasters to do the same.

The SABC said it condemned the burning of public institutions and had taken a decision to not show footage of people burning public institutions such as schools in any of its news bulletins with immediate effect.

SABC Chief operations officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng said the decision was taken to show that violent protests were not necessary.

South Africa will not turn into “another Venezuela”, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan said in Parliament yesterday.

DA MP David Maynier warned that South Africa was in danger of floundering like the South American country.

Gordhan said South Africa was miles away from becoming Venezuela and added that South Africa’s fiscus was well-managed.

The Gauteng education department yesterday passed a R39-billion budget, but not without criticism from opposition parties.

The budget for the 2016/2017 financial year was increased from R36-billion in the 2015/2016 financial year.

The department received an additional R2.2-billion for conditional grants.

The  DA and the EFF rejected the budget.

In his address to the legislature, MEC Panyaza Lesufi said the department focused on investing in pupils, even after high school. In the last four years, the province spent over R886-million on bursaries for 16 171 pupils.
