The workers injured and arrested in the Marikana shooting, their families, and labour union the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (or AMCU), are to approach the courts to force President Jacob Zuma to release the Marikana report.

Andries Mkome, the lawyer representing all parties, confirmed that they would approach the courts on Monday on an urgent basis for the president to release the report.

He said they had written to Zuma asking for him to release the report and if that did not happen, they would have no option but to approach the courts.

They had set a deadline for 2 pm on Sunday for Zuma to say when he would release the report, which has now passed.

Mkome said the time for dialogue had passed adding that they had no other option but to approach the court.

The application is expected to be made in the High Court in Johannesburg.

Nigeria's armed forces killed scores of Boko Haram militants and rescued 20 women and children as part of an operation in the Sambisa forest.

The forest is the group's remaining hideout in the northeast of Africa's most populous nation.

Military spokesperson Major General Chris Olukolade said one soldier was killed in a landmine explosion during Friday's operation and around 10 others were injured.

Olukolade said the troops have forged ahead with the ongoing offensive operations as scores of the terrorists died in the assault on their bases, adding that the operation was ongoing.

The first of a total of 40 Cuban engineers have arrived in the Free State, where they will mainly be involved in improving service delivery, the construction of government subsidised settlements, houses, the provision of water, planning and project management, sewerage and bulk infrastructure basic services supply.

Their fields of expertise include civil engineering, hydraulic, structural and mechanical engineering as well as project management.

According to African National Congress Free State spokesperson Thabo Meeko, the recruitment of the Cuban engineers was part of the partnership between South Africa and Cuba that spans more than ten years.

Meeko said that the enginners were on a contract for two years and they would be strategically placed throughout the province, mainly in municipalities, to improve service delivery.
