De Lille's court hearing postponed 'because judges need more time to prepare'

Temporarily reinstated City of Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille will spend more time in her office after her court battle meant to be heard on Friday was postponed for almost another two weeks.

De Lille announced via her twitter account that her court case had been postponed to June 4 and 5 because the judges need more time to prepare.

She returned to office immediately last Tuesday after the Western Cape High Court temporarily reinstated her, both as a member of the DA and the Cape Town City Council, pending a full review of her removal.

Calls for unity in Presidency budget debate

Some participants in yesterday’s debate on the presidency's budget rose above the acrimonious partisanship characteristic of the fifth Parliament to make calls for unity that will be beneficial for the whole country.

Minister in the Presidency responsible for monitoring, planning and evaluation Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said there was a vicious cycle of poverty which government needed to change.

Dlamini-Zuma added that it must be Thuma mina and fix it concurring to what has become President Cyril Ramaphosa's rallying call since his State of the Nation Address.

The DA leader Mmusi Maimane said politicians must break free from the politics of identity as practised by liberation movements across the continent.

Ramaphosa is expected to respond to the debate today at 2pm.

Still not clear whether Mahumapelo has formally tendered his resignation

By yesterday evening Speaker of the North West legislature Susan Dantjie had not responded to queries over whether Supra Mahumapelo had submitted his resignation.

Mahumapelo announced his decision to "embark on an early retirement" during a media briefing at the ANC's Luthuli House headquarters yesterday.

His province had been embroiled in violent protests as residents and some members of his party called for him to step down.

The entire province has since been placed under administration.

Its provincial chairperson Paul Sebegoe, said the organisation was "excited and elated" by what it termed a step in the right direction.

Also making headlines:

An outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in Democratic Republic of Congo has the clear "potential to expand" as the number of confirmed cases continues to rise, the World Health Organization warned.
