ANC chief whip in Parliament Jackson Mthembu backed Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan, saying he was not the criminal type and called on those who were “peddling lies” about him to be caught.

Addressing journalists in Parliament, Mthembu condemned media reports of Gordhan’s imminent arrest by the Hawks in connection with alleged wrongdoing by an intelligence gathering unit within the South African Revenue Service while he was still its boss.

Following the media reports, both the Hawks and the National Prosecuting Authority denied the minister was about to be arrested.
 

Gordhan later issued a statement, maintaining his innocence, and added that allegations levelled against him were manufactured for ulterior motives.

A second girl who was among more than 200 schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram in a raid on their school in the northeastern Nigerian town of Chibok more than two years ago has been rescued.

Army spokesperson Sani Usman said in an emailed statement that the girl was among 97 women and children held hostage by Boko Haram who were freed on Thursday morning after clashes between soldiers and jihadist militants in northeastern Borno state.

Amina Ali Darsha Nkeki, the first girl to be rescued, was found by soldiers working with a vigilante group on Tuesday near Damboa, south of Maiduguri in the remote northeast where Boko Haram has waged a seven-year insurgency to set up an Islamic state.

The National Treasury said it would meet the Constitutional Court’s deadline to determine how much President Jacob Zuma should pay for the non-security upgrades to his Nkandla homestead.

The deadline is June 28.

On March 31, the court found that Zuma and Parliament had acted inconsistently with the Constitution by ignoring Public Protector Thuli Madonsela's recommendations in her Secure In Comfort report. She found Zuma had unduly benefitted from the R246-million spent on so-called security upgrades to his home in Nkandla.
