Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu has described his late friend Ahmed Kathrada as a person of the highest integrity who was a blessing for all South Africans.

Kathrada, fondly known as Uncle Kathy, underwent surgery for a blood clot on the brain earlier this month but experienced post-operative complications.

In a heartfelt tribute to Kathrada, who died in Johannesburg in the early hours of today, Tutu wrote that when the gates of apartheid's political prisons swung open in 1989/1990 the quality of the human beings who emerged was an extraordinary blessing for all South Africans.

Tutu said Kathrada was a leader who embraced the simple life and supported righteous causes in the country and abroad.

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan is set to return to South Africa today ahead of the Gupta court case after being ordered home from London by President Jacob Zuma, hours before a court hearing over the closure of accounts belonging to friends of the president.

Zuma's order yesterday that Gordhan return "immediately" from a roadshow for investors in Britain and the US had revived talk of a cabinet reshuffle and unnerved investors who see Gordhan as an emblem of stability. The rand fell more than 3% on Monday while bonds tumbled.

Former vice president Joice Mujuru has reportedly blamed Zimbabweans for "allowing [President Robert] Mugabe to hold them 'hostage'", as the southern African country's economic situation continued to deteriorate.

News Day quoted Mujuru as saying "Mugabe had always said if Zimbabweans tell me to go, he will go, so he was there because they have not told him to go.

The leader of the opposition National People's Party said this while visiting party officials admitted at a hospital in Harare after being involved in a car accident.

DA Leader Mmusi Maimane says Kathrada embodied profound sense of compassion and commitment to justice.
