Gordhan says there is no magic formula to solve power crisis

There is no magic formula to solve the current load-shedding crisis and the Minister of Public Enterprises Pravin Gordhan is unable to say when the rotational blackouts will be over.

Gordhan was briefing the media today, along with senior Eskom officials as the country entered its fifth consecutive day of Stage Two to Stage Four load-shedding.

Gordhan said the power giant was still getting a better grasp of the technical problems.

He said investigations are underway by the technical review task team and independent engineers and he promised an update once they gain a better grasp of the system in the next 10 to 14 days.

ANCYL calls on Hawks to leave no stone unturned in Sindiso Magaqa investigation

The African National Congress Youth League yesterday appealed to the Hawks to leave no stone unturned and to assure that justice is served in the murder of former youth league secretary general Sindiso Magaqa

Commenting on the arrest of a senior leader of the ruling party, Mluleki Ndobe, and other suspects in relation to the death of Magaqa, the youth league's provincial spokesperson Mandla Shange commended the Hawks task team on their work, which has resulted in many people being arrested.

Ndobe is expected to appear in court today.

Mabuza says Eskom needs 'crisis reaction'

Eskom chairperson Jabu Mabuza says the operational side of Eskom requires “crisis reaction” as well as time and speed to fix the current load-shedding situation.

The media was taken through several slides showing the gap between Eskom’s installed capacity of 48 000 megawatts and average available supply of 28 000 megawatts

Seven generating units are currently out of the system due to boiler tube leaks.

This is the single biggest cause of plant breakdowns. The power utility’s fleet is ageing and some of the power stations are 50 years old and the average is 37 years old.
