Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan has been given until 4pm today to answer questions posed by a special police unit on his role in setting up a spy unit at the South African Revenue Service.

A spokesperson for South Africa's Directorate For Priority Crime Investigation, known as "the Hawks", confirmed that a letter had been sent to the minister's lawyers but declined to disclose its contents.

The Treasury declined to comment, but Gordhan was scheduled to have a press briefing today at 12pm with business and labour leaders who recently accompanied him on an investor road show to London and the US.

Police are investigating the spy unit at SARS for conducting illegal surveillance on taxpayers. Gordhan headed SARS when the unit was set up but has said he has no case to answer.

According to the Department of Trade and Industry (dti), companies on the mission received assistance through its Export Marketing and Investment Assistance scheme.

One of the objectives of the scheme was to increase export market access for South African products and services.

According to Masina, the mission was part of the dti’s efforts to cement economic relations and increase trade and investment between South Africa and Zimbabwe.
