President Jacob Zuma will earn a cool R2 874 851 a year when his salary increase kicks in on April 1.

The salary increase was approved in the National Assembly yesterday, despite fierce objections from some opposition parties. Zuma was not present.

172 MPs voted in favour of the increase, while 81 voted against, and two abstentions were recorded.

The Independent Commission on the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers recommended a 5% salary increase for Zuma in November.

A last minute bid by the DA and the EFF to block the increase didn’t succeed.

Police shuttered the offices of the Liberian branch of the Red Cross yesterday , days after the president dismissed its board of directors.

This comes during an investigation into the use of funds destined for the fight against recently ended Ebola outbreak.

Some 11 300 people died during the two-year epidemic, the worst on record, in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.

While President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf's office gave no reason for the decision announced on Tuesday to dismiss the Red Cross's board, the organisation had faced a string of graft accusations in the local press.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies carried out an audit of its member organisation in Liberia last year.

The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has welcomed Finance MEC Belinda Scott’s R109-billion provincial budget tabled in the KwaZulu-Natal legislature in Pietermaritzburg yesterday.

ANC provincial secretary Super Zuma said the party noted the R200-million drought relief provided for in the budget.

The provincial government was expected to cut at least R1-billion to curb expenditure in the first year of the Medium Term Expenditure Framework.

Zuma said the ANC commended the provincial government for sticking to the cost-cutting measures, as these guidelines would assist to cut government expenditure, improve financial management and enhance service delivery.
