Nzimande says Gupta leaks may be biggest crisis to hit democratic SA
The leaked Gupta emails may well be the biggest crisis South Africa has experienced since the dawn of democracy, SACP general secretary Blade Nzimande said.
He was addressing members of the National Education and Health Allied Workers' Union at its 11th congress in Boksburg.
Citing comments made by ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe during the Gauteng ANC policy conference last week, Nzimande said some of those implicated were confirming the accuracy of the contents contained in the emails.
A series of leaked emails linking the Gupta family and its associates to President Jacob Zuma’s son, Duduzane, and several Cabinet ministers, have dominated news headlines for several weeks.
DA wants investigation into State capture extended
The DA wants the portfolio committee on home affairs' investigation into State capture to be broadened to include how the Guptas obtained sensitive, confidential state-owned information on some of their loudest critics.
Over the weekend, the Gupta leaks revealed that the family had spied on prominent South Africans - including former finance minister Trevor Manuel, his wife and Absa CEO Maria Ramos, EFF leader Julius Malema and FirstRand bosses Laurie Dippenaar and GT Ferreira - and had access to their travelling movements.
The EFF responded angrily that Malema was not only spied on by the Guptas, but that they did this with the help of the State.
Ramaphosa says silence is a betrayal of the movement
ANC deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa has urged other organisations in the tripartite alliance to continue speaking out when mistakes are made.
Ramaphosa told 576 delegates at the National Education and Health Allied Workers' Union's 11th national congress in Boksburg that not speaking out was a betrayal to the mission undertaken by the alliance.
The SACP and Cosatu have been criticised by some in the ANC for speaking out against happenings in the 105-year-old organisation. This has resulted in some within the different organisations expressing a desire to break up the alliance.
