Tshwane mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa yesterday called on ANC members to rally behind his replacement, Thoko Didiza.

Ramokgopa said he would be at the forefront of leading the campaign of the ANC to retain the city and also for Didiza to ascend to the leadership.

Residents yesterday began protesting against the party’s announcement that Didiza, an ANC national executive committee member, would be its Tshwane mayoral candidate.

The South African Government was making steady progress in the implementation of its Nine Point Plan to reignite growth and create jobs, the Presidency said yesterday.

The plan, which formed part of of the implementation of the National Development Plan, was announced by President Jacob Zuma in his 2015 State of the Nation Address.

Energy, tourism, agriculture, boosting small, medium and micro businesses, science and technology, industrialisation and transport are some of the areas addressed in the Nine Point Plan.

The ANC would not overturn its unpopular decision to make former minister of Agriculture and Land Affairs Thoko Didiza its mayoral candidate in Tshwane, ANC spokesperson Zizi Kodwa told a news agency.

This despite violent protests that erupted yesterday following the announcement.

Kodwa said the protests were not about Thoko but about the ruling party.  He said it was about the ANC adding that the decision will not be changed.

Several buses had been torched in Tshwane's township this evening in Mamelodi, Atteridgeville and Soshaguve.
