South Africa will decide by the end of this year which State-owned companies would be privatised or closed as the government cuts spending amid slow economic growth.

Many of South Africa's 300-odd State entities are a drain on the government's purse and a team commissioned by President Jacob Zuma to review the companies recommended that some companies should be sold.

Director General Lungisa Fuzile said without fear of contradiction, before the end of this year, it would be possible to go beyond just the technical analysis and reporting had begun to point at which entities had got to folded and which ones should be merged.

His comments came after S&P Global Ratings affirmed South Africa's investment-grade credit rating, but kept its negative outlook citing low GDP growth.

Do not replace Public Protector Thuli Madonsela with a lapdog, the DA has said.

DA MP, Glynnis Breytenbach, said Advocate Madonsela, a fearless and non-partisan defender of the people of South Africa, had set the bar high in terms of what was expected of the woman or man who occupies the Office of the Public Protector.

The party called for qualified and courageous individuals to apply or to nominate candidates for the post, following Parliament’s official publishing of the advert.

Madonsela’s term ends in October, and Parliament has tasked the ad hoc committee with nominating a replacement by August 31.

ANC stalwart and African Union (or AU) chairperson, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, yesterday urged women to transform, and not conform to, society.

She was speaking during the ANCWL’s commemoration of 40-year anniversary of the Soweto Uprising and 60-year anniversary of the Women’s March.

The ANCWL also launched its Young Women’s Desk and Doek Weekend campaign at Durban City Hall.

Dlamini-Zuma said the launch of the women’s desk in KwaZulu-Natal was meant to create a platform where women could be heard, articulate themselves and share ideas.
