The South African Communist party in Gauteng resolved on Sunday to suspend with immediate effect five District Executive Committee members implicated in the Tshwane unrest.

The protests were sparked by the announcement of Thoko Didiza as the Tshwane Mayoral candidate for the ANC.

SACP members will be notified of their suspension before the end of the week and will be charged with bringing the name of the SACP in disrepute, the SACP said in a statement.

The SACP also noted that the recent and renewed wave of violence in Tshwane was a continuation of the divisions and factionalism that dated back to 2011.

Meanwhile, the SACP congratulated ANC Tshwane mayoral candidate Thoko Didiza for her nomination.

Grade 12 pupils from the troubled Vuwani area in Limpopo will be assisted with their final exams after their schools were burnt down and vandalised in recent protests, government said on Sunday.

Vuwani residents burnt down and vandalised at least 50 schools in protests against a Municipal Demarcation Board decision.
The destruction started on April 29, when the Masia Traditional Council lost a court application to set aside the Municipal Demarcation Board's decision to merge the underperforming Vuwani municipality with parts of the Malamulele municipality in the Vhembe district.

Nearly 53 000 pupils were affected by the protests and wider shutdowns.

The violence that erupted in parts of Tshwane over the past week, the political killings in KwaZulu-Natal and the general unrest over leadership positions in the African National Congress all boiled down to money, according to former Cosatu general secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi.

He asked why there were no fights for leadership positions during the struggle against apartheid.

He said, leadership positions within the ANC as a ruling party were increasingly associated with access to, or accumulation of, instant wealth. The principles that founded the liberation movement have been turned upside down, said Vavi.
