Four of the South African Broadcasting Corporation journalists that were axed by the broadcaster must be reinstated, the Labour Court in Johannesburg ruled today.

Judge Andre van Niekerk said the respondent's dismissals of the second to fifth applicants was unlawful.

He said the four were entitled to return to work and that the SABC was interdicted from proceeding with the disciplinary hearings of the four before they were dismissed.

Foeta Krige, Suna Venter, Krivani Pillay and Jacques Steenkamp wanted the court to set aside their dismissals and revoke their disciplinary processes.

South Sudanese President Salva Kiir has replaced his vice president and rival Riek Machar following a sharp surge in violence between the government and opposition fighters in the five-year-old country.

Yesterday’s move to replace Machar with General Taban Deng could potentially undermine last year's peace deal and reignite war in Africa's youngest nation.

The country descended into conflict in December 2013 after Kiir accused Machar of plotting a coup.

The African National Congress's Central Karoo constituency office in Beaufort West is a hive of activity as it makes its final push in what is expected to be a tight contest in the August 3 municipal elections.

Regional election coordinator Ayanda Bans who has been working to ensure that the party retains its majority in Beaufort West after its 50.8% nail-biter in the 2011 elections said the campaign was going well.

Central Karoo is the only municipality the ANC won with an outright majority in the Western Cape, with the DA coming in with 41.2%.

Also making headlines:

IFP leader Mangosutho Buthelezi says the party is ready for victory.

Anglo American Platinum operational processing executive head July Ndlovu had been appointed CEO of Anglo American’s coal business in South Africa.

And, Anglo American company Kumba Iron Ore reported headline earnings a share of R3-billion in the six months to June 30, when its financial performance was supported by strong cash generation.
