Home Affairs director-general resigns

Home Affairs director-general Mkuseli Apleni is stepping down after nearly 10 years at the department, news channel eNCA reported today.

It said Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba was expected to announce the move later in the day.

Apleni was reinstated to the post last year after challenging in court, then-minister Hlengiwe Mkhize's decision to suspend him.

NPA declines to prosecute Mduduzi Manana

The National Prosecuting Authority has declined to prosecute ANC MP Mduduzi Manana for allegedly abusing his domestic worker.

Gauteng NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane today said that Manana's case will not go ahead.

Mjonondwane said they declined to prosecute because there were no reasonable prospects for successful prosecution.

Manana allegedly tried to push his domestic worker Christine Wiro down a flight of stairs in May. The charges were eventually dropped.

An audio clip emerged soon after of Manana allegedly trying to bribe Wiro with R100 000 to drop the charges.

And, AU electoral mission head due in Zimbabwe on Tuesday

The Head of the African Union Election Observation Mission, Hailemariam Desalegne, will arrive in Zimbabwe on Tuesday at Robert Mugabe International Airport in Zimbabwe.

Desalegne is the former Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. He was appointed by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat, to lead the AUEOM to the harmonised Zimbabwe elections of 2018.

The AU conducts its election observation in accordance with the AU Charter on Democracy Elections and Governance; the AU Declaration on Principles Governing Democratic Elections in Africa; the AU Guidelines for Election Observation and Monitoring Missions; the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights; and the Declaration of Principles for International Election Observation.

It will also be guided by Zimbabwe’s constitution and legal framework governing the conduct of elections.
