ANC veteran Andrew Mlangeni is to receive the prestigious Freedom of the City of London award in person today.

In January 2016, the 93-year-old was unable to join the late Ahmed Kathrada and Denis Goldberg alongside their Rivonia Trial legal representatives, George Bizos and Joel Joffe to receive the award.

According to then Lord Mayor Jeffrey Mountevans, the honour was a "tribute to the noble and fearless fortitude" of the men in recognition of their fight for freedom and racial equality.

The ceremony is expected to be held at Guildhall, the civic and ceremonial centre of the city.

The historic venue has hosted many important ceremonies, including Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday celebrations.

The late statesman Nelson Mandela received the Freedom of the City at the same venue on July 10, 1996.

Names touted in last-minute discussions ahead of hotly-contested ANC Gauteng conference

The African National Congress Gauteng's regions are still embroiled in discussions about who should lead the province as the party prepares to kick off its 13th provincial congress.

It is widely expected that outgoing acting chairperson David Makhura will receive overwhelming support from the ANC's branches in South Africa's economic hub.

Around 1 600 delegates from across Gauteng's five regions are expected to gather for the three-day conference to elect a new top leadership and discuss their vision for the ANC in the province and the 2019 national elections.

It’s understood that some regional leaders in Tshwane, Sedibeng and Johannesburg endorsed Makhura for chairperson, Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi as his deputy, former West Rand chairperson Boysie Maneli as secretary, Dr Betty Dikgamela as deputy secretary and former city of Joburg Mayor Parks Tau as treasurer.

And, High-level meeting to be held to decide on easing of Cape Town water restrictions

The Department of Water and Sanitation is expected to hold a high-level meeting today to assess whether the severe water restrictions in Cape Town and surrounding areas can be relaxed.

Regional head of the department Rashid Khan yesterday said that there had been requests from users of the Western Cape Water Supply System, including the City of Cape Town, irrigation boards and organised agriculture, to reassess the water restrictions now that winter rains had filled supply dams to 55.8% of storage capacity.

Khan said he does not want to pre-empt the outcome of the meeting, but he can say the national government will sit together around the table with all the users today and talk about the possibility of re-looking at the restrictions.
