President Jacob Zuma is still deciding whether to have another go at appealing the “spy tapes” judgment against him, he said in a written parliamentary reply yesterday.

He said he was still considering the court judgment and weighing his options.

On April 29, the High Court in Pretoria ruled that it had been irrational for the National Prosecuting Authority to withdraw the corruption charges he once faced with French arms company Thales.

Labour federation Cosatu yesterday broke ranks with the ANC on the protests in Zimbabwe, by expressing its support for the protesters.

Cosatu international relations secretary Bongani Masuku said Cosatu urged the people of Zimbabwe to continue with the struggle and not to watch idly while the government trampled on the rights of workers and ordinary citizens.

Cosatu asked that those detained during the protests be released.

The 14 candidates shortlisted for the position of public protector will now be under even more scrutiny.

Corruption Watch’s David Lewis said yesterday the public participation was far from over in the process to find a candidate to replace Public Protector Thuli Madonsela.

The committee tasked with finding a replacement for Madonsela met to finalise the shortlist yesterday, which was whittled down to 14 candidates, including Deputy Public Protector Advocate Kevin Malunga, Western Cape High Court Judge Siraj Desai and Deputy National Director of Public Prosecutions Willie Hofmeyr.

Lewis said, so far, the process had been run openly and transparently and added that they they would do further investigations into the various candidates.
