The chairperson of the SABC yesterday maintained that the public broadcaster was right in banning footage of violent protests after the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa ordered that the editorial directive be reversed.

Board chairperson Mbulaheni Maguvhe told reporters in Johannesburg that he was not surprised by the Icasa decision.

He said he still believed that the state broadcaster was right and said the board would refer the ruling to the SABC legal team and then take a decision on the matter.

South Sudan's President Salva Kiir has declared a "unilateral ceasefire and cessation of hostilities", and ordered government troops to "disengage" from fighting rival forces loyal to Vice President Riek Machar, following days of violence that left hundreds dead.

The order was announced yesterday by presidential spokesperson Ateny Wek Ateny.

Ateny said the president had talks with Machar about controlling their forces in an attempt to salvage what had remained of the peace agreement.

The announcement was made as United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon called on the international body to impose an "immediate arms embargo" on the world's youngest independent state.

DA leader Mmusi Maimane said former president Nelson Mandela's dream was of a non-racial South Africa.

Addressing a small gathering while on the campaign trail in Meyerton in the DA-controlled Midvaal Municipality yesterday, Maimane said the dream of Nelson Mandela was that white, black and Indian people work together to get a prosperous South Africa.

Maimane told the small group of people gathered on a dusty street corner outside the Sicelo Stadium that ANC leaders in the Eastern Cape "even stole money from Nelson Mandela's funeral".
