Communications Minister Faith Muthambi will attend a meeting at Luthuli House today where she is expected to be asked to take action against the SABC board, according to ANC communications sub-committee member Jackson Mthembu.

Muthambi is part of the committee that is chaired by Mthembu.

The SABC board had thus far been supporting Hlaudi Motsoeneng, the national broadcaster’s chief operations officer.

Mthembu said the ANC will tell the minister to act against Motsoeneng for banning the coverage of violent protests.

Zambia's electoral commission has suspended campaigning in two areas, including the capital Lusaka, due to escalating political violence before the August 11 elections.

Police chief Kakoma Kanganja said police in Lusaka on Friday shot dead one opposition supporter in a group that took to the streets to harass motorists and attack police after their political party was denied permission to hold a rally.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia said it was suspending campaigns in Lusaka and Namwala south of the capital for 10 days until July 18 when the situation would be reviewed.

Certain suspended SABC journalists want their suspensions lifted following the indefinite postponement of their disciplinary hearings, trade union Solidarity said yesterday.

The union’s legal representative, Anton van der Bijl said the SABC hadn’t approached them formally but they intended to engage them for meetings.

Their actions followed SABC COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng's decision, announced in May, to no longer show footage of the destruction of property during protests.
