Cape Verde plays down US travel alert over Zika virus.

The overwhelming sentiment emanating from the 2016 World Economic Forum (or WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, is that investors continue to see South Africa as a preferred investment destination, the presidency said on Saturday.

President Jacob Zuma led the high-level Team South Africa delegation and delivered the message that “South Africa was open for business to global investors and other stakeholders.

“The presidency said that Team South Africa leveraged the presence of international business, analysts, and politicians in Davos to assure the global community of the country’s commitment to maintaining policy certainty, fiscal discipline, macro-economic stability, and the promotion of inclusive growth and development.”

While communicating that South Africa was open for business, Team SA also acknowledged the challenging times in which the country found itself.

Cape Verde's health ministry yesterday said concerns prompted by a US travel alert were overblown and that the number of cases of the Zika virus in the West African island nation was on the decline.

The US Centers for Disease Control (or CDC) extended its travel warning on Friday to a further eight countries or territories - including Cape Verde - that posed a risk of infection with Zika, bringing the total to 22.

Zika is a mosquito-borne virus spreading through the Caribbean and Latin America. Only about 20% of infected cases display symptoms, which are usually mild and include fever, joint pain and conjunctivitis.

The DA will today announce its Cape Town mayoral candidate for this year’s local government elections.

DA leader Mmusi Maimane will make the announcement at about 2.30pm, the party said in a statement.

The DA members in the race for the mayoral candidacy would appear before the DA’s electoral college this morning, where one would emerge successful.

Those in line to be named as mayoral candidate include current incumbent Patricia de Lille, Guy Andrews, Daniel Jacobs, Peter Meakin, and Ursula Schenker.

Also making headlines:

The DA yesterday announced that Lindela Tshwete, the son of ANC apartheid activist Steve Tshwete, had joined the party.

Police Minister Nathi Nhleko announced that a panel of experts which would assist in the implementation of the findings of the Farlam Commission had been appointed.

And, DA leader Mmusi Maimane brushed off comments about internal racial politics in the party made by its former parliamentary leader, Lindiwe Mazibuko.
