And, African mediators press Sudan and South Sudan to end their stand-off.

President Jacob Zuma said on Monday that the issue of land restitution could be revisited in the interests of socio-economic equality. He assured citizens that a situation where the land issue resulted in chaos would never be allowed.

He said he felt the law dealing with land restitution was "biased against claimants" and that "even the crafting of the law was biased". He added that the Constitution allowed the government to take action to speed up the restitution process.

Zuma also said the response of white farmers had been encouraging, as many had shown their willingness to discuss the issue and were eager to help emerging farmers.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has welcomed the French-led military intervention in Mali at the request of the government there and voiced the hope that it would halt an assault launched by Islamist militants.

A UN statement said that “the secretary-general hoped these actions would help to arrest the latest offensive while efforts continued to fully implement Security Council Resolution 2085 (2012) aimed at the full restoration of Mali's constitutional order and territorial integrity."

France informed the council on Friday that its military operations in support of the Malian army against Islamist rebels would last as long as needed. It also called for an acceleration of the deployment of an African-led force in support of the Malian army, in line with Security Council Resolution 2085, which was unanimously approved in December last year.

The African Union sought on Monday to defuse hostilities between Sudan and South Sudan that brought them close to war last year and end a freeze on oil exports that threatens to wreck their economies.

The AU brought together Sudan's President Omar Hassan al-Bashir and South Sudan's Salva Kiir a week ago in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa to press them to fulfil promises made in September to pull back troops from the north-south border.

After that meeting, AU mediator Thabo Mbeki said both sides had agreed to set up the buffer zone. The regional body planned to publish a timeframe on Sunday, when the talks were supposed to resume. But both delegations arrived late, delaying the start by a day.

Spokesperson for South Sudan's delegation Atif Kiir said “the discussions would centre on overall implementation of the agreements.” There was no immediate comment from Sudan.
